The Bellshill and District Community Forum in partnership with the NHSL Health Improvement Team and Community Learning and Development, Bellshill have organised a trip to New Lanark to celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD).
The day falls on March 8 and 2011 is the centenary of the event which first took place in 1911. The trip is to give 50 Bellshill women attending the chance to find out more about the individual who devised New Lanark, Robert Owen, as well as familiarise them with two of New Lanark’s central tenets namely Social Inclusion and Early Intervention.
Anila Ansari, a community health educator based in Motherwell Health Centre, said: “Social inclusion and Early Intervention are still very much part of our work today and we wanted to give people a chance to visit this place which was very much ahead of its time.
“Robert Owen was also way ahead of his time with regards to women’s rights reflected in his comment ‘Women will be no longer made the slaves of, or dependent upon men. They will be equal in education, rights, privileges and personal liberty’.”
With the theme of this year’s IWD being improving access to education and science for women, the New Lanark visit has even more significance.
Anila continued: “Owen was also very forward thinking on things like childcare and workplace nurseries, employment training and education.
“For many women the lack of access to these can still be a barrier for them today and I think it’s right that we should highlight someone who was aware of them and tried to address them 200 years ago.”
She added: “As a woman from the black and minority ethnic community, I also find Owen’s enlightened views on religious tolerance very relevant to me and think it’s fantastic that someone was so positive at that time.”
