Projects: Social Car Rental Scheme

VANL hosts the North Lanarkshire Social Car Rental Scheme. This is a new pilot project (June 2010 to September 2011), based in the Wishaw office. It aims to provide cars on a short-term loan basis to unemployed people living in the North Lanarkshire area.

The scheme is targeted at clients who are looking to start full-time work but due to a number of possible reasons (e.g. no connecting bus service, early or late shifts, and affordability issues of running a car) are unable to take up the offer of paid employment.

Who is eligible to use the scheme?

• Anyone aged 21 +
• Resident in North Lanarkshire
• Currently unemployed
• Have no other reasonable means of getting to work, i.e. where public transport is not available/feasible for the client in seeking to accept the offer of employment
• Have an offer of employment

What will the service cost?

• Clients will be asked to make a weekly payment towards the running cost of the scheme
• All tax, insurance and maintenance costs will be covered by the project, for the duration of the loan
• Fuel costs will be the responsibility of the client

Who will carry out the maintenance of the vehicles?

• VANL has made arrangements for the vehicles to be serviced and MOTd on an annual basis
• Clients will be expected to take their vehicles to an appointed garage for a monthly check also. VANL will cover these costs
• Each client will be expected to carry out a weekly walk-round check, looking at the condition and roadworthiness of the vehicle
• The coordinator will also carry out spot checks from time to time, to ensure that they are being kept in a clean, tidy and roadworthy condition
