Voluntary Action North Lanarkshire re-launched their popular Voluntary Car Scheme on Wednesday 4th May. The reason for the re-launch was to inform the local community, about what the service can offer to local people in the area and about the new more affordable pricing structure.
Pat Mc Allister (Transport Co-ordinator with VANL) explains:
“ The Voluntary Car Service allows individuals to be picked up at their homes and taken to a range of appointments, for example to health appointments, education/training courses and job interviews to name but a few. The transport is provided by a volunteer car driver in his/her own vehicle, with the driver usually waiting and taking the customer back to their own home in a safe and friendly manner without rush or fuss. No cash is required as all trips are invoiced to the customer at the end of each month”
Francie Fallan (Chair of VANL) concurred with this:
“ In the current economic climate, transport costs have soared for everyone but it has made travel to important appointments extremely difficult for the more isolated and vulnerable members of our community. As a result we have reviewed our current Voluntary Car scheme charges, to reflect more fairly the current financial constraints placed on the local community. The charge per mile for individuals is therefore being reduced from 58p per mile to 45p per mile. We hope that this will give isolated and vulnerable members of the community more freedom to travel and improve greatly their quality of life”
Mary Travers, a regular customer from Viewpark gives her view on the service.
“ VANL offer me a fantastic service, which without it I wouldn’t be able to get out each week to visit my husband Harry in Lesmahagow Nursing Home. I love getting picked up my driver Stephen, who is so kind and helpful and the office staff are so friendly and accommodating also. Obviously, the reduction in the charge is a great help to me as I can now get to visit my husband twice per week instead of only once like before. I have mobility problems as well, so it helps that the drivers are all very well trained and so patient with me. I would recommend the car service to anyone in a similar situation to myself, I think it’s a fabulous service.”
Special rates are also available to community and voluntary groups who may require lifts for their staff, volunteers and clients to appointments, clinics and training courses.
